Background: The top tier division in Scotland between seasons 1890-91 & 1974-75. The competition was suspended between seasons 1939-40 and 1945-46 due to the outbreak of World War Two. Between seasons 1946-47 & 1955-56 the competition was briefly known as Scottish League Division A. The competition was scrapped at the end of season 1974-75 as league reconstruction was implemented.
